Gulmarg is a compound word or portmanteau of two Persian words Gul and Marg. Gul means flowers and Marg means meadow. Gulmarg literally means “Meadow of flowers” and was so named after Sultan Yusuf Shah of Chak who ruled Kashmir from 1579 to 1586, ‘Sultan Yusuf Shah of Chak’ dynasty visited the frequented the place with his queen Habba Khatoon and renamed it 'Gulmarg'. Sultan Yousuf Shah Chak was the most romantic ruler of Kashmir's post-medieval period. Before that Gulmarg was called the Gauri Marg (the path of Goddess Gauri), Gulmarg is located 60 KMs away from Srinagar which is an hour and half journey by car.
